Will Katherine Pirce die in "500 Years of Solitude"

What’s so special about The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Episode 11. Well, not only is it the first episode to air in the year 2014 but it’s also the CW series’ 100th episode. Clearly, a major milestone such as this one means the storyline will be bolder, richer, and more emotionally wrenching than ever before. And, judging by the revealing episode title — “500 Years of Solitude” — we already know we’re in for one epic evening: a look at Katherine Pierce’s life.

It doesn’t take a genius to fit the pieces together and realize that “500 Years of Solitude,” a play on Gabriel García Márquez timeless novel 100 Years of Solitude, is going to revolve around our favorite survivalist, Katherine a.k.a. Katerina Petrova, and her journey from ostracized daughter to vampire-on-the-run to rapidly aging human.

In fact, Ian Somerhalder told Alloy Entertainment at TVD’s 100th episode celebration that the event was going to focus on Katherine and her connections to the various characters, including the pain she’s caused the Salvatore brothers. (Watch the exclusive HERE for further details.) The 500-year-old doppelganger, who was turned into a bloodsucking creature in 1492 in an effort to escape the maniac Original known as Klaus, has led quite a thrilling (if not lonely) life and it makes sense that the 100th episode would explore her adventurous-yet-troubled existence.

That being said though, the poetic title and it’s nostalgic tone make us question whether Katherine’s journey will come to an end in TVD episode 5×11. In Marquez’s book, the last surviving members of an important founding family discover ancient prophecies that apparently reveal the truth about who they are: that generations of their family and their village’s inhabitants have actually been living out a preordained cycle, one of great beauty and tragic sadness. (Hmm. We’re probably over analyzing, but that sounds quite similar to the doppelganger mythology, don’t you think?) Plus, the producers and writers have proven consistently that no one — not even a sassy bad girl who’s seeking redemption — is safe in the world of the supernatural. It’s hard to imagine the show without her so we’re going to hope for the best.
